Chartreux

The Chartreux, referred to in the German popularly known as the Carthusian, is a French breed cat with blue-gray fur and amber eyes.

Origin

It is suspected because of their coat structure that the Chartreux is originally from the mountains of Syria or the Rocky Mountains between Turkey and Iran. Accordingly, the race came through trade movements to the Middle East to France and was to the 19th century very important for the fur industry and for food production. The modern breeding started in 1925 by the brothers Léger on the island of Belle- Ile, the largest of the Breton islands, since a sufficient population of wild gray cat was ( the precursors of today Chartreux ).

Although it is close, this breed has nothing to do with the Carthusian monks. It is believed that the Chartreux was named after the color like blue-gray wool Pile Places des Chartreux, which was imported from Spain.

History

Since the Second World War the number of Chartreux was very low and they wanted to avoid inbreeding, at times the British Shorthair ( BKH ) was crossed with the French Chartreux, which is no longer allowed today. In the early 1970s the blue color varieties of both races from the International Stud FIFe were grouped under the common name Chartreux, in Germany and Austria Germanized to Carthusians. In addition, Persian cats were bred, what the features of the original Chartreux increasingly displaced; only the typical blue color of the coat and eye color reminded substantially to this breed.

In parallel, the few original French Chartreux were further cultured, mainly in France and the Benelux countries, but not crossed with other breeds. Thus, the features of the Chartreux were preserved until today. Through the efforts of the President of the Club Du Chat Des Chartreux, Jean Simonnet, who had represented the diversity of races and BKH Chartreux in several publications, recognized in 1977 the FIFe the Chartreux as a separate breed with its own standard of. Today, only the Chartreux Chartreux may be called, but that does not prevent some breeders of British Shorthair still denotes blue representatives of the breed as a Carthusian.
