Chasnans

Chasnans is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Chasnans lies 720 m, 8 km south-southwest of Valdahon and about 27 kilometers southeast of the city of Besançon (air line). The village is located in the Jura, on a gently sloping hillside to the south on the plateau of Valdahon, called the first plateau of the Jura, above the valley of Athose and at the edge of the first high Jura chains.

The area of ​​7.87 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The northwestern part of the area is occupied by only weakly in relief plateau Valdahon, which is an average of 720 meters. It is mainly composed of arable and meadow land. In the south the plateau is bordered by the valley section of the village of Bach's Athose which drains the area to the southwest of Loue. With a narrow strip, the municipality's area extends to the southeast into the territory of the first high Jura trains. It extends over the height of Le Moray ( 857 m) and the trough of Petit Paris to the heights of Cicon. Here the highest elevation of Chasnans is achieved with 910 m.

To Chasnans include the hamlet of Petit Paris ( 786 m) in a trough on the main road N57 and various individual courtyards. Neighboring communities of Chasnans are Vernierfontaine in the north, Nods and Arc- sous- Cicon in the east, the south and Athose Lavans- Vuillafans in the West.

History

Is first mentioned Chasnans in 1208 under the present name. Over time, however, the spelling changed over Hanan ( 1254 ), Chenans (1301 ), Chanens ( 1361 ) and Chaignans ( 1429). Ecclesiastical belonged to the parish Chasnans always Nods and was in the Middle Ages from the rule of Pontarlier dependent. In 1537 the village came into the possession of the reign Châteauneuf ( at Vuillafans ) and 1627 under the rule Cicon. Together with the Franche -Comté Chasnans came with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France. Through a devastating fire on January 29, 1747 22 of 25 homes were destroyed. In the following period the village was rebuilt at its present location.

By January 1, 2009 there was a change in the membership of the district municipality. So far, belonging to the district Besançon, all municipalities in the canton came to the district Pontarlier.

Attractions

The Mairie ( Municipal House ) with its bell tower was built in 1848. In the village are farmhouses are preserved in the characteristic style of the Franche -Comté from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Population

With 249 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Chasnans one of the small communities of the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1881 390 persons were still counted ), a population growth was recorded since the mid-1970s again.

Economy and infrastructure

Chasnans was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) embossed village.
