Château Cos Labory

The Château Cos Labory is one of the smaller wineries from Bordeaux with 18 ha bestockter wine growing area. Since the classification of 1855, the winery is classified as " Cinquième Grand Cru Classé " Good fifth in the classification.

It is located in Saint -Estèphe in the south, close to the municipal border with Pauillac, and opposite the former Château Cos d' Estournel Schwestergut, at the " Route du Vin ", the department of road no. 2 The goods were separated in 1789 as a result of the French Revolution.

With 18 hectares under vine, the Gut is one of the small goods of class Médoc châteaux. The areas are planted with 55 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 35 % Merlot and 10 % Cabernet Franc. After a maceration period 18-25 days, the wines are aged around 15 months in barrique. The barrels are replaced each year to 30 to 50 %. Since the early 1990s, the malolactic fermentation is carried out in a wooden barrel.

The word Cos derives from the district of Caux. Caux means in Gascony hills of pebbles. In fact, the estate has about three acres on a gravel hill, which ranges from Château Lafite -Rothschild to Cos Labory.

History of the estate

The vineyards of Cos Labory were freed only in 1789 during the French Revolution of Château Cos d' Estournel. First owner after the division was François Labory, who gave his name to the Good. In 1845, Louis- Gaspard Estournel bought back the estate Cos Labory, had it but seven years later resell.

His land transactions, the extensive construction activity and the elaborate costs of winemaking on Estournel had let him fall into deeper and deeper debt. At the end of his long life he had completely impoverished and in debt left to his fellow banker the property. However, he was allowed to remain living in the neighborhood of his beloved vineyards.

Since 1958 Cos Labory part of Audoy family. The winery is run by Bernard Audoy.
