Chateau-Thierry American Monument

The American Memorial Château- Thierry is located on the hill 204, provides a broad view of the Marne Valley and lies about 87 km east of Paris. Not far (about 7.2 km south-east ) is the American Cemetery Aisne -Marne. The memorial commemorates the achievements of the 2nd and 3rd U.S. Infantry Division in heavy fighting around the area during the battle of Chateau -Thierry in the second battle of the Marne. It was built in 1929-1932 and inaugurated in 1933.

Description

Two stone pylons mark the entrance to the memorial of the N-3 highway that runs from Paris to Chateau-Thierry. The monument consists of a double colonnade drag on for a long terrace. On its western facade there are allegorical figures representing the United States and France. The sculptor was the Franco-American artist Alfred Bottiau. The English inscription reads:

This monument erected HAS BEEN by the United States of America to commemorate the services of her troops and Those of France who fought in this region falling on the World War. It stands as a lasting symbol of the friendship and cooperation in between the French and American Armies.
