Chatuchak Weekend Market

The Chatuchak Weekend Market ( Thai: ตลาดนัด จตุจักร, pronunciation: [ tà -là ː t nat - ʤà -tu- ʤàk ] ) in Chatuchak district in Bangkok is the largest market of its kind in the world. He is regarded as a paradise for shoppers who like to haggle.

The Chatuchak Weekend Market covers an area of 1.13 square kilometers, which is used by more than 10,000 stalls and small shops. History

The Chatuchak Market owes its existence to an idea by the former Thai Prime Minister Plaek Phibulsongkhram (1938-1944, 1948-1957), who wanted to be in every city in the country to set up a flea market. In Bangkok in 1948, the first such flea market as a so -called "weekend market " built at Sanam Luang.

In the early 1980s, the government decreed that the Sanam Luang will be converted into a public park for citizens of Bangkok and to serve as a central venue for the 200-year celebrations of the Rattanakosin era in 1982. So it was decided to implement the flea market in the district Phahonyothin on the grounds of the golf course the Thai railway company. He was later named after the nearby Chatuchak Park and gave the later designated District ( Khet ) Chatuchak his name.
