The city of more than twelve kilometers south of the Spanish border and 22 kilometers south from Verin. Vila Real is to reach 60 km south distance across the National Road 02.

History

The city is of historic and strategic importance. In early times here an important Roman garrison was established. In the city that bore the Roman name Aquae Flaviae, Hydatius was a bishop in the 5th century. During the Napoleonic invasion in the early 19th century Chaves was an important strongpoint. Chaves immersed in the history of warfare twice as Schlachtenort on: The Battle of Chaves against the French troops in 1807 and the attack of the royalists of 1912.

Chaves was already fixed in advance. A medieval castle and the ruins of two fortresses, Forte São Francisco and São Neutel Forte, from the 17th century to crown the city. The Roman bridge over the Tamego with its stone arches still stands and is one of the most important sights of the city. Economy

Agriculture and services are the main industries in the region. The area of ​​Tâmegatal, known as the Veigatal is very fertile. Potatoes, corn and vegetables are grown. Several quarries are in the area, as well as mineral water wells near Vidago. Many residents of the area are in the more northern Europe, particularly to France, emigrated. In August, the emigrants return to their villages and towns, so that the inhabitants of Chaves doubled.
