Chea Sim

Chea Sim (* 1932 in Svay Rieng province ) was until 1978 a Khmer Rouge official in Cambodia, today he is the Secretary General of the Cambodian People's Party (german Cambodian People's Party or CPP).

Chea Sim was probably revolutionary already active in the fifties. Twenty years later, he was secretary of the regional committee of the Communist Party of Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge. After the seizure of power by the Khmer Rouge in 1975 Chea Sim was commander of a military unit in eastern Cambodia. Against the background of ideological conflicts within the organization he fled in 1978 shared with Heng Samrin and Hun Sen to Vietnam. In 1979 the newly founded with the help of Hanoi People's Republic of Kampuchea Chea was first interior minister after the elections of 1993, Chairman of the National Assembly ( and as such responsible for a possibly taking place throne of King Norodom Sihanouk ), 1999 finally President of the Senate in Phnom Penh.

Chea Sim is currently chairman of the ruling CPP in Cambodia, he was and is still known as the " strong man " in the party. His political influence is based on the early stage he built up a loyal network CPP party members. Though Chea Sim, Hun Sen is said to have patronized sustained since 1979, there are rumors that speak of a rivalry between Chea Sim and Prime Minister Hun Sen in Cambodia.
