Yellow Wing Erzschwebfliege ( Cheilosia impressa )

The yellow wing Erzschwebfliege ( Cheilosia impressa ) is a fly from the family of hoverflies (Syrphidae ). The genus Cheilosia with about 60 species in forests, mostly bound moist deciduous forests.

Features

The yellow wing Erzschwebfliege is a small dark species with a body length of 6-8 mm. The entire head is black, only the sensor stand out black brown. The labels and the mesonotum is black hairy and dotted. The plate boundary is also bristles black. On abdomen bright and dark hair can be seen. An important distinguishing feature is the yellow wing base. The legs are also black. Together with Cheilosia schnabli has this kind of a button-shaped bulge on the outer sides of the front hip, which is a unique distinguishing feature among the European Cheilosia species. A likelihood of confusion under certain circumstances with the larger type Yellow Weißdornschwebfliege ( Myolepta luteola ), but has an easily recognizable two-dimensional gradient from yellow to black on the abdomen.

Occurrence

It is widespread in Europe, Siberia and the Far East. In Europe, it comes from the plains to the mountains before, there in deciduous forest, marshy - swampy lowlands, montane meadows and grasslands up to 2000 m altitude.

Way of life

The adults usually fly at a height of 2-5 m. They are flower visitors especially on umbelliferous plants but also on thistles, buttercups and cranesbill plants. The larvae feed on the root cuttings, stems and petioles of burrs or Cunegonde herb ( phytophagous ).
