Cheng Bugao

Cheng Bugao (Chinese程 步 高, Pinyin Chéng Bugao; * 1893, A. 1898, 1906, in Zhejiang Province, Chinese Empire, † June 20, 1966 in Hong Kong ) was a Chinese film director.

Life

Cheng studied at the Zhendan University in Shanghai and wrote regularly for newspapers of the city on film. Without prior formal education, he had his directorial debut in 1924. In 1928 he went to the Film Society of Zhang Mingxing Shichuan and quickly developed into one of the leading directors of the studio, where he was employed until 1937. Among his best known films today include the 1933 incurred Chun can ( Spring Silkworms ) and Kuang liu (wild torrents ) and Xinjiu Shanghai ( Old to New Shanghai, 1936). Cheng's films are known for their critical review of social circumstances. After the war Cheng Bugao settled in Hong Kong and did more consciously apolitical films. From 1952 he has been working there for the Great Wall Film Company. In 1962, he went into retirement.
