Chernogorsk

Chernogorsk (Russian Черногорск ) is a city in the Republic of Khakassia (Russia) with 72 147 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located north of the Sayan Mountains, about 15 km north-west of the Republic capital Abakan, a few kilometers away from the left bank of the Yenisei. The climate is continental.

The city is Chernogorsk the Republic administratively subordinated directly. From the city, the urban-type settlement Prigorsk ( Пригорск, 2,632 inhabitants) is managed so that the total population of the administrative unit " city circle Chernogorsk " is 74 749 (2010).

History

Chernogorsk was created in 1936 by the union of several settlements that were created since the beginning of the coal industry in 1904 to several shafts of Minusinsk coalfield. The name refers to the coal (Russian чёрный / Tschorny for black).
