Chernyshevsky, Sakha Republic

Chernyshevsky (Russian Чернышевский, Yakut Чернышевскай ) is an urban-type settlement in the Republic of Sakha ( Yakutia) with 5025 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The settlement lies on the southern edge of the Middle Siberian mountains belonging Wiljuiplateaus about 900 miles as the crow flies west of the Republic capital Yakutsk, on the right bank of the Lena Creek Wiljui.

Chernyshevsky belongs to Rajon Mirny, whose administrative center Mirny it is about 100 kilometers in a north-westerly direction away. Previously, the 79 km northerly along the road to Aichal and Udatschny Olguidach settlement was administered by Chernyshevsky, who still had about 500 inhabitants in 1989, but in 2001 only one official residents. Today Olguidach is left; the territory belongs to the Evenk " National Nasleg " (Town ) Sadyn with center in lower down on Wiljui village Sjuldjukar.

History

The settlement was founded in 1959 in connection with the construction of the dam and hydroelectric power plant of Wiljui Reservoir. 1961, the status of an urban-type settlement was awarded. The settlement was named after the writer, journalist and revolutionary Nikolai Chernyshevsky, who until 1883 was located in 1864 in Siberian exile, including since 1871 in the downstream along the Wiljui located Wiljuisk.

The power plant was completed in 1976; then the number of inhabitants declined.

Economy and infrastructure

Townscape end company is the Wiljui hydroelectric power plant ( Wiljuiskaja GES) with a capacity of 680 megawatts, which is mainly used for power supply of the westjakutischen diamond mining areas around Mirny and Aichal - Udatschny and operated by Jakutskenergo. There is also a fish farm on Wiljui Reservoir, a forestry and geological exploration operation.

Through the settlement passes the road which leads from Lensk to the middle Lena over Mirny to about 330 and 380 kilometers north of Chernyshevsky past mining centers Aichal and Udatschny. The road is currently being developed and will be extended under the name Anabar up to the opening into the Arctic Ocean in the north- west of the Republic of Sakha rivers Olenjok and Anabar.
