Chess World Cup 2009

The World Chess Cup 2009 ( officially: FIDE World Cup 2009 ) was held from November 20 to December 15 in Khanty- Mansiysk, Russia, instead. The winner, Boris Gelfand earned itself the right to participate in the Candidates Tournament for the World Chess Championship 2012.

The tournament, which will be played in the Cup system, participated in 128 of the best players in the world.

Except where otherwise noted, all players wore the Grandmaster title. The number after the name is the Elo rating, which had the respective player at the start of the tournament. The following players refused to participate: Anand, Carlsen, Topalov, Aronian, Kramnik, Leko, Adams, Nakamura and Ni Hua. Of these, Anand, Topalov and Aronian are already qualified for the Candidates Tournament or the World Series; Carlsen, Kramnik, Nakamura, Adams and Ni play from 7 to 15 December at the London Chess Classic.
