The Braunbauchamazilie ( Amasilia castaneiventris ) is a hummingbird of the genus Amasilia Hummingbirds. It is native to Colombia.

Description

The Braunbauchamazilie reached a size of 9 cm. The male has a straight medium sized beak with a red meat base on lower mandible. The top is bronze-green. Throat and upper breast are gold green glitter. Lower abdomen, under tail- coverts and tail feathers are chestnut colored. The control springs have greenish edges. The female has a lighter colored belly and a white Subterminalband on the upper throat feathers. The immature birds have reddish brown edges at the neck and Bürzelfedern.

Distribution and habitat

The Braunbauchamazilie is endemic to the slopes of the Serranía de San Lucas and in the eastern Andes in north-central Colombia. On the eastern slope of the Serranía de San Lucas, it was found only once in 1947, all the recent observations are from the western slopes of the valleys of Sagamosa and Lebrija and from Soatá, Boyacá and Santander, in the eastern Andes. The Braunbauchamazilie inhabited canyons with bush vegetation and edges of mountain moist forests him altitudes 850-1500 m to 2200 m rare. At the Serranía de San Lucas, was observed at a height of 120 m.

Way of life

The Braunbauchamazilie feeds on the nectar of various flowers, including the genera Salvia and Trichanthera. Small arthropods enrich the food supply. The breeding season is from August to December. The clutch consists of two eggs, which are incubated by the female.

Status

BirdLife International estimates the stock of Braunbauchamazilie to 1000-2500 copies. The Braunbauchamazilie lives in a restricted area of ​​distribution that is threatened by overgrazing and fire clearance. The majority of the eastern slope of the Serranía San Lucas had been settled in 1996 and altered by agricultural use and cultivation of coca. Furthermore, their habitat through immigration, an oil pipeline and the mining industry is under threat. The Braunbauchamazilie is listed in Appendix II of CITES.
