Chibchanomys

The Chibcha water mice ( Chibchanomys ) are a living in northern South America rodent genus from the group of rats fish within the New world. They consist of two types.

Like the other rats fish species adapted to aquatic life of these animals. They reach a body length 11-13 centimeters, the tail is as long as the body. Their fur is dyed black gray at the top, the underside is lighter.

They live in northern South America in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador and Peru. Several animals were found on the riverbank of a densely forested mountain range in approximately 2500 meters height. You go in the water in search of food and feed on aquatic insects, crustaceans and other aquatic animals.

There are two types:

  • Chibchanomys orcesi was not described until 1997. The species lives in southern Ecuador.
  • Chibchanomys trichotis is common in Venezuela, Colombia and Peru. Prior to their inclusion in the new genus Chibchanomys the species was incorporated into Ichthyomys.
