Chichele Professor of Public International Law

The Chichele Chair of International Law ( Chichele Professorship of Public International Law ) is a statutory existing at the University of Oxford Chair in the field of international law. The appointment was made in honor of Henry Chichele, who worked as Archbishop of Canterbury in the 15th century and All Souls College, Oxford founded. The Chair was established in 1854 as "Institute of International Law and Diplomacy " by removing five positions Fellow of All Souls College. He was first occupied in 1859 and later received its present technical term. He is the oldest of the five existing at the University of Oxford chairs, bearing the name of Henry Chichele. Under the Articles, the Chichele Professor of International Law is also a Fellow of All Souls College, University.

The Chichele Chair of International Law belongs alongside the existing at the University of Cambridge Whewell Chair of International Law, which was established nine years later, internationally the most prestigious academic positions in the field of international law. The holders included, for example, Ian Brownlie, Daniel Patrick O'Connell and Humphrey Waldock, who later served as President of the European Court of Human Rights and the International Court of Justice.
