Chinandega

Chinandega is a town in the department of Chinandega same name in the north- west of the Central American state of Nicaragua with about 133,700 inhabitants ( 2004). It is located 134 km northwest of Managua, capital of Nicaragua and is located on the Pacific coast.

History

Chinandega was probably founded in the year 596. Before the discovery of America by the Spaniards Chinandega was a large area and was called " Tezoatega ". The present name means in Nahuatl language as much as "place of palm roofs ". From 1529 - during the Spanish colonial era - the place was the seat of a patron and became a center of agriculture. At that time, Chinandega took the rank of a "villa ", ie a smaller place. Chinandega in 1839 was appointed by decree to a city.
