Chips and Technologies

Chips & Technologies was the first fabless semiconductor company, that did not have its own manufacturing facilities. This business model has been developed by the company's founder, Gordon Campbell.

The first product was an EGA -compatible graphics chip. This was followed by chipsets for PC motherboards and other graphics chips. Chips & Technologies also developed an 80386 -compatible microprocessor, the Super386. He was in spite of many advantages not as successful and famous as the processors from Intel, AMD and Cyrix.

In addition to IBM Chips & Technologies was the first company to offer a VGA chip. This 82C451 opened up the market, which was soon entered by other companies such as Trident Microsystems, Western Digital, Cirrus Logic, Oak Technology, and others. 1997 Chips & Technologies was acquired mainly because of the graphics division of Intel.
