Chira Island

The Isla de Chira is an island in Costa Rica. It belongs to the province of Puntarenas and forms one of the 13 districts of the canton of Puntarenas, with a population of 1534 according to the census of 2000. Covering an area of 43 km ² it is the largest island in the Gulf of Nicoya and apart of two inland islands in the estuary of the Río San Juan is also the largest of Costa Rica. The west and south of the island is hilly, the Northeast occupies a large estuary with mangroves. About 4,000 people live on Chira, mainly in three villages. Most important source of income for residents is fishing, and there are projects for sustainable development and tourism. The island is accessible via a boat connection from Puntarenas.

The island reaches its maximum height of 173 meters in the west.
