Chistopol

Tschistopol (Russian Чистополь, Tatar Чистай / Çistay ) is a city in Russia, in the republic of Tatarstan. It has 60 755 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) and is located around 140 km south-east of the Republic capital Kazan, on the left bank of the Kama.

History

The village was founded in the early 18th century as Tschistoje poles, literally translated as " wide field ". Initially, it was a village and had with 1763 census already about 1000 souls. It Agriculture was practiced here, especially the cultivation of grain.

When the Russian government reform end of the 18th century Tschistoje Pole was given the status of a city and a county center. Here, the shortened name Tschistopol a naturalized only gradually. In the 19th century, the city developed into a major grain - trading center of the Volga region, and later was played as well industry. The Rajon Tschistopol is still an important grain - growing area.

Economy

In the city are now over a dozen factories in operation, including a watch factory, several food factories, a shipyard and a joint venture with Siemens AG for the manufacture of auto parts.
