History

As a founding date is now the year 1367 indicated, however, there are indications that the town was possibly earlier. A strong development went through the settlement after Bessarabia became part of the Russian Empire in 1812. 1859 Orthodox monastery was built in the settlement. After the First World War fell Bessarabia to Romania, 1940 to the Soviet Union, was then briefly re-occupied by Romania and in 1945 finally ceded to the Soviet Union. Chitcani was then part of the Moldavian SSR. In 1991, the Soviet Union dissolved and the Moldavian SSR declared its independence. However, it came to the Transnistrian conflict, since 1992 Chitcani part of the de facto independent Transnistria and not under the control of Moldova.
