History

Bauerhufen was originally a small fishing village where there was a tavern. In 1784, 15 hearths (households) were counted in Bauerhufen. Only four of the inhabitants, including the mayor and the tavern owner, possessed little arable acreage. 11 of the households belonged to fishermen who had no own country. The town developed in the 19th century to a small seaside resort with a modest infrastructure. In 1923 there were in Bauerhufen an inn on the beach with 30 rooms ( beach castle ) and a pension and guest houses in private houses, and in the summer lodged at the place about 400 bathers.

Towards the end of the Second World War, the region was conquered by the Red Army and then - as the whole of Pomerania - placed under Polish administration. The German site Bauerhufen received the Polish name Chłopy. It started the immigration of Poles who displaced the locals from their homes. During the immediate postwar period, the native German population was expropriated and expelled because of Bierut Decrees.
