Chlorotoluron is a chemical compound from the group of urea derivatives. It is in the form of a white powder.

Occurrence

In 2001-2002, the Dutch water companies have repeatedly interrupted the taking of Rhine water for drinking water due to high concentrations of the herbicides isoproturon and chlortoluron. Since 1 July 2001, the application of chlortoluron in Germany was forbidden. In the Netherlands ended the approval on May 1, 2000; there shall also be a ban on use since 1 May 2002. In Belgium, France, Luxembourg and Switzerland chlortoluron is approved. In 2008, two plant protection products containing that substance was in Germany back on the market. In Austria chlortoluron is not contained in any approved drug.

Use

Chlortoluron was used as plant protection products ( urea herbicide ) or as herbicides including in winter wheat and winter barley. The mechanism of action by absorption through the roots is due to inhibition of photosynthesis at photosystem II

Safety

In chlortoluron suspected of a carcinogenic effect.
