Snowa v SSSR (Russian Снова в СССР, English Back in the USSR, also known as The Russian Album ) originally published only in the Soviet Union on 31 October 1988 music album of the British musician Paul McCartney, consisting exclusively of rock-' n'- roll classics there. It is including the Wings albums, the twenty-second album Paul McCartney after the breakup of the Beatles. It was released on September 30, 1991 in the UK and October 29, 1991 in the United States.

Formation

After his last solo album Press to Play a commercial failure, was devoted to McCartney various music projects, then McCartney decided to return to his musical roots and record his favorite songs from the 1950s. A spontaneous session on 20 and 21 July 1987, the album Snowa v SSSR with cover versions of sixteen rock-' n' -roll pieces originated. On July 22, the mixing of the songs was performed. Paul McCartney was pressing for his family and friends a few LPs, which he gave away at Christmas time in 1987. Four of these songs Midnight Special, Do not Get Around Much Anymore, Lawdy Miss Clawdy and Kansas City, have been used as a B-side tracks for two maxi singles of Once Upon a Long Ago, which appeared in November 1987.

In 1988, decided Paul McCartney and his then manager Richard Ogden to make the album appear in the Soviet Union exclusively. Снова в СССР should be a gift to Russian McCartney fans who were difficult to acquire his other publications in 1988.

The album title Снова в СССР is a translation of written by McCartney Beatles Back in the USSR, which was published in 1968 on the so-called White Album. Both the Cyrillic and the Latin spelling of the album title can often be found. The title is the German transcription Snowa v SSSR.

Although from the sessions emerged 22 pieces, contained the first 50,000 produced and published on 31 October 1988 copies only eleven songs.

When in December 1988 appeared a new pressing with 350,000 copies of the album in the Soviet Union, one added the songs I'm Gonna Be a Wheel Someday and Summertime as well as a back cover text by Roy Carr. The original cover text was written by Andre Gavrilov. The second edition of the album had now following order of songs:

On January 26, 1989 Paul McCartney for the BBC Russian Service gave an interview to his album in the Soviet Union to apply. In September / October 1991, the album was released worldwide on CD and it came I'm in Love Again, which was released in July 1989 as a B- side of McCartney Single This One, added, and the album included henceforth 14 pieces. Two other songs of this recording session were published elsewhere: I Wanna Cry as another B-side of This One and It's Now or Never on the issued by the NME in February 1991 CD The Last Temptation of Elvis.

The CD release was not commercially successful. One of the possible reasons is that potential buyers who import from the Soviet Union had acquired vinyl LPs or bootlegs.

The cover

The album cover was designed by McCartney's wife Linda McCartney and Paul shows with a red star. This photo was created during the recording of the album Ram.
