Choco Pie

Choco Pie is a South Korean snack, consisting of two small round cake layers with marshmallow filling and chocolate coating, similar to a Moon Pie. It is sold since 1974 by Orion Confectionery. By 2006, sales totaled 12 billion pieces. In South Korea, Orion is by this product is the leading provider of Pies. Among other things, the company supplies the South Korean military, which distributes the Choco Pies to soldiers. Other important markets are China, Russia and Southeast Asia, where children are the primary consumers in the age group 5 to 10 years. The rival company Lotte has an eponymous product in the range that is offered at a lower price.

Orion produced the snack in Korea and sold it there for about 300 won per piece. In North Korea, a black market has developed for the product, to be paid on the far higher prices. The black market is supplied, among other things nordkoreanischern workers in the Kaesong Industrial Region, where South Korean business partners of their staff pay bonuses in the form of Choco Pies.
