Choh Hao Li

Choh Hao Li ( Cho Hao Li, Chinese李卓皓; * April 21, 1913 in Guangzhou (Canton), China, † 28 November 1987) was a Chinese- American biochemist. Li was regarded as a leader in the field of biochemistry of hormones of the adenohypophysis ( anterior part of the pituitary gland ).

Life

Li was one of ten children of a Chinese industrialists. Choh Hao Li acquired in 1933 at Nanjing University, a bachelor and held there also lectures in chemistry before at the University of California, Berkeley ( UCB) in 1935 went to a Ph.D. at Thomas Dale Stewart to acquire. There, Li married his fellow student, Shen Lu - Hwai who finished her studies with a Master in Agricultural Sciences. At Berkeley, Li worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Herbert Evans. 1942 Li was Lecturer, Assistant Professor in 1944 and Associate Professor in 1947. 1949/1950 he went as a Guggenheim Fellow Arne Tiselius at Uppsala University and Fred Sanger and Rodney Porter at the University of Cambridge. From 1950 headed the Li laboratory for hormone research at the UCB. 1957 Li took a sabbatical with Robert Schwyzer in Basel to learn methods of peptide synthesis. Lis successor in Berkeley in 1967, William Rutter, as Li with his laboratory moved to the University of California, San Francisco ( UCSF ), where he remained until his retirement in 1983. Until his death in 1987, Li launched but continue the Laboratory of Molecular Endocrinology at UCSF.

Work

Li was in over 1100 scientific publications spanning six decades of fundamental insights into biochemistry, kinship ( innerhelb of the same species and between different species ), effects and cross effects of numerous peptide hormones win - especially the proopiomelanocortin complex.

Even at Evans Li began to develop methods to isolate hormones of the adenohypophysis. 1940 succeeded Li luteinizing hormone ( LH) isolate. Adrenocorticotropic hormone adrenocorticotropic hormone ( ACTH ) has been identified and at least partially synthesized. Other achievements include the identification and purification of somatropin ( growth hormone, GH) ( the synthesis succeeded Li as late as 1973 ), the identification of β - endorphin and the identification and purification of insulin like growth factor 1 ( insulin -like growth factor 1, IGF -1 ).

Li was also able to make important contributions to early protein and peptide chemistry.

Awards and honors (selected)

Li received ten honorary doctorates, including the Catholic University of Chile, the University of Hong Kong and the University of Uppsala. Together with Herbert Evans Li was nominated at least twice for the Nobel Prize. Lectures are held annually to commemorate Choh Hao Li at UCSF and the Academia Sinica.
