Choi Il-nam

Choi Il -nam ( born December 29, 1932 in Jeonju, Jeollabuk -do) is a South Korean writer.

Life

Choi Il -nam was born on December 29, 1932 in Jeonju, Jeollabuk -do. Until 1956 he studied at the Seoul National University Korean Language and Literature. A postgraduate degree in the same subject at the Korea University he graduated from in 1960.

He made his literary debut in 1956 with the novel Payang ( 파양 ). Besides his work as an author, he began a career in journalism. So he worked among others as head of the cultural part of the newspapers Minguk Ilbo, Kyunghyang Sinmun, and Dong -A Ilbo and then was head of editorial at Dong -A Ilbo. However, a post he was forced to retire in 1980, since the military regime took over the press system. In 1984, the continued his journalistic career and was also involved in the democratization of the press.

Since 2002 he is a member of the National Academy of Arts of The Republic of Korea and was from 2005 to 2007 chief of the local literature range.

Choi Il- nam's works can be divided into two categories. In his early works, before 1980, the contents often turn to persons from the rural, the developing in a fast, successful start -industrialized city a new life. Despite the success of the characters, the author attempts to show the dark side of industrial development and shows what sacrifices were made in rural areas in order to develop the industrial city. After the author was dismissed in 1980 from the journalism field were changing its contents towards more intense criticism of social reality. However, he writes not sharp social criticism, but shows among other things the everyday human egoism.
