Cholpon ( Kyrgyz Чолпоната ) is a seaside resort on the north shore of the Issyk Kul Lake in Kyrgyzstan, 240 km east of the capital Bishkek and 135 kilometers west of Karakol.

The all-year population is about 12,000. The place contains many originating from the Soviet era hotels, sanatoriums and guest houses to accommodate the many summer visitors, the recovery found here during the Soviet era in organized mass holiday, vacation today mostly in small groups or as a family guest. Because of the relatively warm sea water, shallow beach and reliably warm summer weather is Cholpon pleased again today very popular with tourists from Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, and the view across the lake to the south to the mighty peaks of the Tianshan Mountains is impressive. However, significant modernization investments would be needed to attract more demanding guests from abroad. Many of the hotels are now owned by investors from Kazakhstan, make the first renewals. The drinking water supply of the city that no longer meet modern requirements particularly in terms of hygiene, is now renovated with funds from the World Bank.

The petroglyphs of Cholpon

Two miles north-east of the village there is a place artifacts left with about 2000 petroglyphs, which mainly come from the Skytenzeit (8th to 3rd century BC ). 90 % of the rock carvings represent animals such as ibex, horses and camels. The remaining drawings are mostly representations of hunting scenes.
