Chongorói

Province

Chongorói is a village in the Angolan province of Benguela and also the name of a Munizips ( comparable to a German district ), whose capital it is.

To the north it borders the municipalities Munizip Chongorói Cubal and Caimbambo, east and south with the province of Huíla on the southwest by the province of Namibe and to the west by the Munizip Baía Farta.

During the civil war in Angola, the area around Chongoroi was repeatedly the scene of battles and raids. UNITA forces attacked again and again even convoys of MONUA and WFP and injured or killed while staff and volunteers of UN and NGOs. One of the heaviest raids took place in October 1997, a total of five people were killed there. Two of those killed were employees of the German aid agency Santa Barbara Foundation Germany, including Tom Sauber, a German paramedic.
