A chord keyboard is a keyboard that can be operated solely by movement of the finger and hand movement and without often with a single hand. To achieve the full keyboard functionality, you have thereby possibly multiple - up to five - buttons simultaneously, so that the characters are equally represented as chords like a piano. For this purpose, the keyboard on a particularly large number modifier keys.

These keyboards are used when normal keyboards would be impractical ( for example, if the inputs have in standing, walking or lying down ( bedridden ) to take place ). For ease of operation, the chords are set according to findings from the coding theory and psychology in order to use simple chords for frequent characters.

A disadvantage is the relatively higher amount of training, with regular characters rates can be achieved after completion of the learning phase. Chord keyboards for stenographers are among the fastest and most precise input devices for texts, but what a three-year, intensive training of the user is typically required.
