Choroni Beach

Choroní is a village in the state of Aragua in Venezuela. It is known especially for its fishing harbor of Puerto Columbia and its beaches.

History

At the point of Choroni 1616 Church of Brother Pedro Buitriago already built. As a colonial village, it was recognized in 1622 by the Spaniards. At the beginning it was through the rainforest difficult to reach by land, in the absence of a road. Today, this rainforest is the National Park Henri Pittier, which was named after the Swiss scientist Henri Pittier.

1875 here was Madre Maria de San José was born, a woman who stood up for the poor and founded a religious order in Maracay. She was beatified in 1995 by Pope John Paul II.

The road to Choroní was built around 1920 and paved in the 70s. Due to the long seclusion of the place many buildings have been preserved from the colonial era.

Economy

Especially in the 19th century was Choroni known for high-quality cocoa grown there. Today, cocoa is grown here, but most important industry is tourism. Every year Choroni and especially Puerto Columbia of 20,000 to 30,000 tourists visited who appreciate the area because of the beautiful sandy beaches. The largest sand beach here is the Playa Grande.

Regular events

Every year on 24 June, the day of Juan el Bautista is celebrated with a procession and a colorful festival. However, the most important festival is the celebration for the city of Saint Clare of Assisi in August. Every evening meet many residents Choronis the Malecon, the promenade in Puerto Columbia.

Attractions

At the Plaza Bolivar in Choroni is the Iglesia de Santa Clara. A church that is famous for over the altar only to the wall painted altarpieces and decorated parapet.
