Chris Carter (politician)

Chris Carter ( born May 4, 1952 in Auckland ) is a New Zealand politician ( Labour Party ). From 2002 to 2008 he was Minister, with his areas of responsibility often changed. Among other things, he was from 2005 to 2007 Housing Minister and then Minister of Education until 2008.

In Parliament Carter represents the electoral district of Te Atatu, where he was first elected to the New Zealand House of Representatives in 1993. Although he was not re-elected in 1996 directly and received only one seat on the party, but he managed in 1999, 2002 and 2005, the direct re-election in his constituency Te Atatu.

Carter was born in 1952 and grew up in Panmure, a suburb of Auckland, on. He received an education at St Peter 's College in Auckland and studied at the University of Auckland, where he earned a MA reached in history.

Before embarking on the professional political career, he worked as a teacher and as a poultry farmer. His life partner, Peter Kaiser, who works as a teacher. With him he lives together for over 30 years. On February 10, 2007 married Carter and Kaiser. Carter was the first parliamentary deputies in New Zealand, entered into a Civil Union.

Carter was the first openly gay man living, who was appointed in New Zealand to a ministerial post. He is committed to LGBT rights in New Zealand.
