Christ of the Abyss

The Cristo degli abissi ( German: Christ the abyss ) is a bronze statue, which was erected in 1954 on the seabed in the Bay of San Fruttuoso, Liguria. The Christ the Redeemer statue is located at a depth of 15 meters inside the marine reserve Portofino.

History

The idea of the statue dates back to Duilio Marc Ante, who suggested in memory of the perished in a diving accident in 1950 Dario Gonzatti to this project. On August 22, 1954, the statue of Christ was very close to the Abbey of San Fruttuoso, Camogli and Portofino between communities, situated. In its sinking depth of 17 meters, the Italian Navy was involved.

The statue is about 2.5 meters high and was executed by the sculptor Guido Galletti. The hands of Jesus are directed against the sea surface in the sign of peace.

For the various bronze medals, ship elements were melted down (drive screws of submarines of the U.S. Navy ) and church bells. After the death of Marc Antes a plaque at the base of the statue was installed.

2003, the Cristo degli abissi was restored and re-erected on 17 July 2004 on a new foundation shallower.
