Christian Petzold (composer)

Christian Petzold (* 1677 in Weißig at Königstein, † June 2, 1733 in Dresden, also: Pezold ) was a German organist and composer.

Life

Petzold was born the son of a quarryman. He was from 1703 organist at the church of St. Sophia in Dresden, from 1709 as well as chamber composer at the local court. For the inauguration of the Silbermann organ in the church of St. Sophia, he composed a cantata in 1720. Extensive concert tours have taken him to Paris in 1714 and 1716 to Venice.

Johann Mattheson Petzold counted among the most famous organists of his time. He was the teacher of Carl Heinrich Graun and Johann Gotthilf Ziegler. Of his works, however, are only a few receive (including three trio sonatas, two Partitas for Viola d' amore, a cantata and a collection of harpsichord pieces 25 " Recueil de 25 pour le clavecin concerts ").

Works

Petzold's best-known compositions are two minuets in G major and G minor for harpsichord or clavichord, the Anna Magdalena Bach has taken in her " Notebook ". Since the first entries are in this Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach 1725 fair copies of the Partitas A minor and E minor by Johann Sebastian Bach ( BWV 827 and 830), written by this myself, and since sooner not between the manuscripts Anna could distinguish Magdalena and Johann Sebastian, the following entries for Bach's autographs were held. The two minuets by Petzold that appear without giving the composer as No. 4 and 5 of the note booklet were therefore generally attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach ( BWV Anh 114 and 115). Only in 1979 was Hans- Joachim Schulze prove the pieces in a harpsichord suite by Petzold.
