Christian V of Denmark

Christian V (* April 15, 1646 in Flensburg, † August 25, 1699 in Copenhagen) was from 1670 to 1699 King of Denmark and Norway.

Life

Christian V was the son of King Frederick III. and Sophie Amalie of Brunswick- Lüneburg. Shortly before his father's death he had been involved in the business of government and thus hardly prepared for his royal duties. He was initially limited to advisors instructed under which Peder Schumacher Griffenfeld gained power and influence in particular.

Christian led from 1675 to 1679 during the Scanian War, an unsuccessful battle against Sweden to the provinces of Skåne, Blekinge and Halland.

With effect from April 15, 1683 Christian V had the previously applicable in the individual regions of Denmark Rights ( Jütisches right Scho African law and Seeländisches law) by the Danish Code " Danske Lov » replace.

1686 he besieged the Free Imperial City of Hamburg with a 16,500 man strong army to take this, but the plans of conquest had to give up in spite of violent struggles for a comparison.
