Christopher Herbert

Christopher William Herbert ( born January 7, 1944 in Lydney in the Forest of Dean ) is a British Anglican theologian and former Bishop of St Albans.

From a shipping family, he studied for his degree in Monmouth (1954-1962) theology and philosophy at the University of Wales Lampeter ( -1965 ), the seminary in Wells ( -1967 ) and graduated from the University of Bristol. After his ordination in 1967 he was curate and substitute teacher in Tupsley Hereford ( 1967-1971 ). After working as a consultant in Religious Education (1971-1976) and as director of educational issues of the Diocese of Hereford (1976-1981), he became vicar (1981-1990) in a location near Farnham in Surrey. In 1990 he became head of training for clergy, Archdeacon of Dorking and honorary canon of Guildford Cathedral. In 1995 he was appointed Bishop of St. Albans.

During his tenure as diocesan bishop, he served as Chairman of the Council of Christians and Jews in the United Kingdom. Since 1999, sitting in the House of Lords, its main field of activity lay in the areas of health and medical ethics. He was a member of the selection committee, which collected proposals to change the law on euthanasia and assisted suicide and questioned. In 2008 he obtained his doctor's degree PhD at the University of Leicester.

On his 65th birthday, he resigned his office of bishop back .. He is married and has two grown sons. Honorary side, he still acts as bishop representatives in Guildford, Chichester, Salisbury and Winchester.
