Christus (Liszt)

Christ is an oratorio by Franz Liszt.

Formation

It was built 1862-1866 and is named after the legend of Saint Elizabeth the second oratorio written by the Hungarian composer. Once the favorite of Liszt for the textbook Georg Herwegh and Peter Cornelius failed, Liszt presented themselves together to add audio Bible passages. After some partial performances in 1866 came on 29 May 1873 premiere of the entire work in Weimar. Even friends of Liszt responded then cool on the work. Performances at the beginning of the 20th century inspired Schoenberg, Webern and Richard Strauss. The work will be performed more frequently again since 1970 and is repeatedly recorded on CDs; a corrected edition ( Barenreiter Verlag, Kassel) has been performed in September 2006 in Weimar and Görlitz.

Action

In Liszt's Christ is not, in a setting of Jesus' life and suffering in the classical sense. Liszt's intention was to awaken the Christian values ​​such as love and peace in him. Placing priority on the work forms the set No 12, Stabat mater dolorosa, which contains all verses from the liturgical sequence of the Middle Ages.
