Chromis

Damselfish ( Chromis chromis )

Chromis is the most diverse genus of damselfish (Pomacentridae ). In German, the fish are referred to as Schwalbenschwänzchen. The school of fish live in tropical and subtropical coral and rocky reefs of the Atlantic and Indo-Pacific the. They prefer reefs that are exposed to periodic strong currents. The damselfish ( Chromis chromis ), who lives in the Mediterranean, the Black and Azov Sea and in the Atlantic from Lisbon to the coast of Morocco, is a long time the only species in European waters.

Together with the Anthias Chromis include swarms to the characteristic picture of Außenriffhänge. Like almost all damselfish Chromis species inhabit the upper 15 to 20 meters of the water column. However, when Zooplanktonfresser you will find in deeper zones food. C. amboinensis, C. alpha, C. axillaris, C. delta, C. mirationis, and C. retrofasciata be, besides just three other Riffbarscharten well below 60 meters encountered. C. abyssicola, C. leucura, C. struhsakeri, C. and C. Woodside verater even still occur below 100 meters.

System

According to phylogenetic studies, the genus is not monophyletic but consists of three clades of the one belonging to the most hochrückige species, the sister group of Dascyllus and contains another genus Azurina.

The following cladogram shows the phylogenetic relationships again:

I Chromis (including C. abyssus, C. alpha, C. alta, C. analis, C. atripectoralis, C. cadenati, C. caerulea, C. caudalis, C. chromis, C. chrysura, C. circumaurea, C. flavomaculata, C. fumea, C. insolata, C. nitida, C. opercularis, C. punctipinnis, C. ternatensis, C. viridis, C. weberi, C. Woodside, C. xanthochira, C. xanthopterygia, C. xanthura )

Chromis II ( Azurina, C. acares, C. atrilobata, C. brevirostris, C. cyanea, C. multilineata )

Chromis III (C. agilis, C. amboinensis, C. atripes, C. iomelas, C. margaritifer, C. ovatiformis, C. retrofasciata )
