It is written in Latin and tells the world events that started with the biblical Creation to the 12th century AD The focus is on the stories of the Bible, the Visigoths in Spain and the kingdoms of Castile and León. The Chronica was an important model for later Spanish historians, especially for De rebus Hispaniae of Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada, the Chronicon mundi of Lucas de Tuy, and the Estoria de España which is written under the patronage of Alfonso X of Castile.

In addition to classical and biblical authority, the Chronica Naierensis relates to a large extent on the Cantares de gesta ( Spanish heroic epic ). In the Chronica is not an original work but a compilation of various works. The history of the Visigoths derived mainly from Isidore of Seville and the recent Spanish history includes the corpus Pelagianum, a work which was written under the supervision of Pelagius, Bishop of Oviedo. The Chronica was completed towards the end of the 12th century.
