Ciarán Bourke

Ciarán Bourke ( born February 18, 1935 in Dublin, † 10 May 1988 ) was an Irish folk musician and founding member of the Dubliners. He sang, played the guitar, tin whistle and harmonica.

Life

Ciarán Bourke was born in Dublin, the son of a doctor and came even as a child by his Irish-speaking nanny with the Irish language in contact. He attended an Irish-speaking school ( Coláiste Mhuire on Parnell Square in Dublin) and then enrolled at the Faculty of Agriculture, University College Dublin, but abandoned his studies after a year again. Ciarán Bourke was the only member of the Dubliners, who had attended a university.

After leaving the university, he met as a street musician Ronnie Drew and Barney McKenna, who invited him to their samples in O'Donoghue 's Pub. Luke Kelly joined the group, which became famous as " The Dubliners ".

Illness and death

On April 5, 1974 Bourke had to cancel shortly after the break, because of violent headaches a concert of the Dubliners in Eastbourne. He was taken to London and St. George's Hospital, Hyde Park Corner, admitted, where doctors diagnosed a brain haemorrhage. Bourke was transferred to the Atkinson Morley Hospital in Wimbledon and after the return of his wife, who was on a trip to Ghana, operates. During surgery, there was a renewed bleeding with the result that altered consciousness and a left- sided paralysis remained.

Ciarán Bourke was treated intensively in Dublin in a rehabilitation clinic in Dun Laoghaire, and his recovery made ​​such good progress that he insisted to attend the next tour in Germany the Dubliners in November, although his bandmates worried about his health made ​​themselves and prefer have seen a gradual return to work. Although Ciarán Bourke could not occur with the Dubliners, he was until his death considered as a band member and received his share of the royalties.

Ciarán Bourke died in 1988 after a long illness from the effects of cerebral hemorrhage and multiple strokes.

Family

On April 5, 1964 married Ciarán Bourke Jeannie Bonham. They had six daughters: Ciara, Laoighse, Siobhra, Rathfionna, Saoirse and Seodhna.
