Cimiez

Cimiez is a district situated on a hill within the sixth canton of the French city of Nice.

History

The hill served in the 3rd-2nd century BC as the base of the Ligurian tribe of the Vedianter. The Roman Emperor Augustus chose the place ( Kemenelon Greek, Latin Cemenelum ) 14 BC. Than capital of the province Alpes Maritimae In the 5th century AD Cimiez was abandoned in favor of Nikaïa ( Nice). Today Cimiez is a district of Nice.

Attractions

  • The ruins of the Roman period ( arenas, amphitheaters, baths and early Christian basilica )
  • The monastery of Cimiez, followed up with the rose garden and chapel of the Franciscan low of 1546
  • The Musée Matisse, especially with sculptures by the artist,
  • Built for the British Queen Victoria as a winter residence Palais Régina.

On the occasion of the Annunciation on March 25, Cimiez commits in particular on the monastery grounds, the festival of the Festin Courgourdons ( Nissart: Festin dei Cougourdoun ). The Courgourdons are pumpkins that are often offered in a particularly unusual shapes.

Since the summer of 2011, the Nice Jazz Festival is no longer in Cimiez place, but directly in Nice in the Jardin Albert 1er, near the Place Massena.
