Cingetorix (Gaul)

Cingetorix was in the middle of the 1st century BC, living prince of the Celtic tribe of Treverians. He joined forces with Gaius Julius Caesar during his Gallic War.

Life

The Treverians were organized as an aristocratic republic with mighty high nobility and several leading men ( principes ). At the time of Caesar's battles in Gaul Cingetorix quarreled with his father- Indutiomarus to supremacy among his people. When Caesar in 54 BC before his second UK campaign drew the Treviri whose attitude seemed very unsure Cingetorix turned immediately to the side of the great Roman general and also told him about the events in his parent while his opponent Indutiomarus to romfeindlich showed. Caesar replaced the leadership conflict in the Treviri started peacefully in his mind, rendered Cingetorix supremacy and weakened the position of its rivals, who had to make 200 hostages.

Indutiomarus incited in winter 54/53 BC his tribe and neighboring peoples to revolt against the Romans and let Cingetorix explain to the country's enemy and collect the goods. Cingetorix escaped to the camp of Caesar Titus Labienus commander. After he had beaten the Treverians twice, Indutiomarus had died, the people subjected to the Romans, and Cingetorix received due to his loyalty to Caesar in 53 BC again supremacy. Then Cingetorix is no longer mentioned in the sources.
