Circipania

The Zirzipanen (also Circipanen, dt to the Peene ) were a medieval elbslawischer tribe and one of the sub-tribes of the Lusatians. They settled around the Teterower lake on the territory of modern Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Their tribal area Circipania included the Castle Ward district Demmin, Dargun, Krakow am See, Sukow and Altkalen. This is the area south of the Recknitz and Cernosin and west of the Malchiner Lake and Lake Kummerow, in the field of Altkreise Güstrow ( eastern part ) and Demmin.

In the 6th and 7th centuries this area was settled by the tribe. Teterow became the administrative center of the tribe. In the 9th century a castle wall was built on the island in Lake Teterower. He served not only as a royal residence, but also as the main place of worship and Tempelort for the Slavic deity Svetovid. In the 11th and 12th centuries, the country was repeatedly under Danish rule, also attracted inter alia, the Obodrites and Pomeranians against Circipania and the tribe was nearly exterminated. Zirzipaniens western regions came to the Obodritenfürstentum, later Mecklenburg, while the Demminer area in Pomerania remained. From 1131 until his death in 1160 the Prince obodritische Niklot ruler was the Zirzipanen. 1147 devastated the Wendish Crusade and several Danes campaigns after 1170 the area several times. Later, the area was settled by German as part of the eastern settlement, the remaining Zirzipanen were assimilated.

In Behren- Lübchin there was a more heavily fortified island fortress from the 10th to 12th century, which was probably mentioned in the report of Saxo Grammaticus in the year 1171. The castle was probably conquered the late 12th century by the Danes.
