Citadelle of Quebec

The Citadelle of Québec is a fort located in the present-day Quebec City. Today it is partly in use of the Canadian Forces.

History

The star-shaped fort was built 1820-1832. After the British -American War was the most important function of the Citadelle of Quebec, prevent the Americans from crossing the St. Lawrence River and to reach Canada. The fort was never attacked and could not fulfill its purpose until today.

The fort now serves the Canadian Forces as a military barracks. Part of it is open to the public as a museum and thus a tourist attraction in Québec.

Method of construction

The Citadelle of Québec is built star-shaped. The purpose of this design is the complete visual coverage of the environment, so that the enemy can be spotted as soon as possible. The protection of the ramparts, walls and entrances from attacks was guaranteed by outworks.
