Cittaslow

Cittaslow (slow city,. Ital = città city, Eng slow = slow) is a movement that was founded in Italy in 1999. It was inspired by the philosophy of the Slow Food movement. Main objectives are to improve the quality of life in cities and preventing the unification and Americanization of cities where franchises dominate. The support and emphasis on cultural diversity and their own and specific values of the city and its environs are also central Cittaslow goals. In a broader sense Cittaslow can be attributed to the trend of the so-called slow- motion ( cf. deceleration ).

Cittaslow is also spreading from outside Italy. In January 2006 Cittaslow networks existed in Germany, Norway, the UK and Spain. In other countries also villages and cities are working towards the accreditation of the Cittaslow organization.

Membership and their requirements

As Slow Food and Cittaslow is a membership organization. The full membership of Cittaslow is only possible for cities with a number of residents of under 50,000. To qualify for membership, a city normally has at least 50 % of the criteria observed in a self-assessment process and then can apply for the national Cittaslow network. The criteria for application are composed of the seven subject areas together environmental policy, infrastructure policy, urban quality, appreciation of indigenous products, hospitality, awareness and scenic quality. Also belongs to the membership an annual contribution to the organization.

Another category of Cittaslow membership is that of the Cittaslow supporters, a possibility which was created in 2005 and is open to institutions, companies and cities that support the objectives of the Cittaslow, but can not qualify for full membership.
