The City West Link is an arterial road in Sydney in the east of the Australian state of New South Wales. It combines the Victoria Road at the western end of the ANZAC Bridge in Rozelle with the Parramatta Road ( Great Western Highway) in Five Dock. Thus, it represents an alternative route to Parramatta Road from the city to the western suburbs of the city

Course

The City West Link starts at the Victoria Road ( S40) in Rozelle. In parallel to Lilyfield Road Lilyfield he runs westward through the Iron Cove Bay. From there he leads 1.5 km to the southwest and ends at the Parramatta Road (Met -4) in Five Dock.

History

The City West Link was - to the disappointment of local residents - nothing more than the expansion of existing roads to at least four lanes. The work was carried out in four phases:

  • Construction phase 1 ( completed in December 1991 ): Height -free connection to the Victoria Road
  • Phase 2 ( completed in February 1993): broadening of Brenan Street between The Crescent, Rozelle and Catherine Street in Lilyfield. Until the completion of the next phase of construction the Brenan Street is one-way system, which resulted in the Lilyfield Road.
  • Construction phase 3 ( completed in May 1995): broadening of the Dobroyd Parade and the Wattle Street to four lanes from the Parramatta Road to the Hawthorne Canal (Iron Cove )
  • Construction phase 4 ( completed December 2000): broadening of the connection of Dobroyd Parade and Catherine Street, including a new bridge over the Hawthorne Canal at Iron Cove. The City West Link was the Metroad 4 slammed.

In early 2004 already complained motorists that the new road was already overloaded almost four years after its completion. Since it opens in Five Dock in the Parramatta Road, it relieves indeed the further from there to the downtown section of Parramatta Road, moved to her neck of the bottle but only further out of town and does not eliminate it.

2005, a bottleneck at the eastern end of the City West Link was removed. Until then, the two lanes into town were at the transition to the Victoria Road, west of the ANZAC Bridge reduced to one lane. Now you have the two lanes pulled through to Victoria Road, where they are reduced together with the three lanes of Victoria Road to four lanes over the ANZAC Bridge.

Expansion plans

The Road Traffic Authority of New South Wales wanted the City West link connecting to the Western Motorway and thus bypass the Parramatta Road completely. Also all level crossings on City West Link would be eliminated in the same train. The expansion would have been difficult and would have to build bridges for the City West Link on the intersections in question due to some lack of space of which had only two lanes can be performed.

Residents and action groups made fears claims that such a development would already existing traffic congestion worse just yet. End of 2004, this project was abandoned.
