Civil Code of Lithuania

The Lithuanian Civil Code ( lit. Lietuvos Respublikos civilinis kodeksas, LR CK) is the comprehensive Lithuanian Privatrechtskodifikation and main source of law of the Lithuanian Civil and Commercial Code (the Lithuanian Commercial Code has not been adopted ). The Lithuanian Civil Code replaced the previous model code of Soviet civil law and consists of 6 books. Some legal standards have been adopted by European law books (or jurisdictions such as France, Netherlands, Germany ).

The law adopted on 18 July 2000 (No. VIII - 1864) is one of the newer Zivilrechtskodifikationen in Europe and replaces the Sowjetlitauische Civil Code of 1964 ( Lietuvos TSR civilinis kodeksas ) and the Marriage and Family Code. It entered into force on 1 July 2001 (some standards until 1 October 2001, or on July 1, 2003).

The new Code has been prepared since 1995 by private law scholars of the Law Faculty of Vilnius University. The working group was chaired by Prof. Valentina Mikelėnas.
