The Ebenästige reindeer moss ( Cladonia portentosa ) is a richly branched fruticose. It features light -rich locations on acidic, poor soils.

Description

The Ebenästige reindeer moss growing shrubby ground resting. It is characterized by a relatively regular, allseitswendige branching. This distinguishes them from the similar reindeer moss ( Cladonia rangifernia ) or Cladonia arbuscula, whose branch ends are inclined in one direction. The hollow stems ( Podetien ) grow upright and are of white- greenish or grayish color in the shade or yellowish in sunny locations. At the top they are often browned. They do not wear flakes or scales. The surface looks tomentose. Fruiting bodies ( apothecia ) are rarely developed.

Distribution and location

The species is widespread in the Atlantic- subatlantic deciduous deciduous forest zone. Where it grows on poor, acidic soils and bedrock in dwarf shrub heaths, sandy dry grasslands and sparse forests (pine forests or lean oak and beech forests) from the lowlands to the subalpine altitudinal zone.
