Clapping

Clapping sound is a gesture in which the palms are beaten. By clapping one can express his approval ( approval, applause ) or by a rhythmic clapping the beat in pieces of music or a dance specify or emphasize.

General

Percussive music can come into existence in two ways, namely through the use of percussion instruments such as drums, drums or tambourines or through body percussion ( engl. body percussion ). Body percussion can be realized by rhythmic foot stomping, finger snapping, beat on his chest or hands clapping. This almost all rhythms can be represented.

Techniques

There are four types of gossiping:

  • Flat Hand Clapping: The fingers of the hand - blow be struck straight into the palm of the other hand.
  • Palm of the hand clapping: With both hands, a bowl is ever formed, and these two dishes are struck together.
  • Backhand Clapping: The fingers of the hand are stretched and blow upside down in the palm of the other hand beaten.
  • Well clap: The impact the receiving hand forms a " fountain", the blow is with the palm of the hand.

Ethology of gossiping

The Ethology of gossiping deals with the question which has roots clapping as a term of praise in the human phylogeny. Simple clapping and rhythmic clapping have one thing in common: It will usually run together, creating a sense of community. Applaud can also go into rhythmic clapping. The boundary between applause and the joy of common rhythm can then blur.

The phylogenetic development of gossiping as a term of praise is hardly investigated.

Music

Gospel music

The rhythm of church gospel music was, for lack of rhythm instruments, illustrated by hand-clapping. The clapping of hands served in the Gospel of worship more than the applause. The emphasis on rhythm is achieved by percussive elements such as hand clapping and foot stomping. The best example is the worldwide hit Oh Happy Day by the Edwin Hawkins Singers.

In the time of the hippie movement, the discrete clapping was in many rock or folk songs have preferred the dull and loud drums or served at least to supplement its provisions ( The Beatles: I Want to Hold Your Hand ). For one, the sound of a clap better suited to the mood of the songs and other animated rhythmic clapping his audience to join in ( The Beach Boys: Barbara Ann or John Lennon's Give Peace a Chance ). In some cases an imitated with the drums, clapping was used to achieve the same effect in his audience ( The Knack: My Sharona ). An exception is the beginning of the song We Will Rock You the British band Queen. Here rather creates a feeling of strength and power that is produced mainly by the mass of rhythmic gossipers. Originally Rasta music from singing, clapping and about the rattle or the rhumba box.

Since the mid- 70s, the rhythmic clapping in pop music has become increasingly accepted. In the current music scene, there are only very few examples. An exception here are often referred to as summer or Party Hits mood songs that want to create by the special rhythm under their listeners a lively atmosphere (eg Sheryl Crow All I Wanna Do ).
