Clarence Crafoord

Clarence Crafoord ( born May 28, 1899 in Hudiksvall, † 25 February 1984 in Danderyd ) was a Swedish surgeon (cardiovascular and thoracic surgery).

Crafoord received his Licentiate in Medicine in Stockholm in 1924 and his medical doctorate in 1938. He was from 1939 to 1957 senior surgeon at Sabbatsberg Hospital in Stockholm ( where he was since 1928) and 1957 to 1966 Head of the Department of Thoracic Surgery at the Hospital and in 1948 to 1966 professor at the Karolinska Institute, where he was a lecturer since 1940.

In October 1944 he became the first surgical correction of aortic coarctation. That was a year before this Robert Edward Gross succeeded, which is also often called a pioneer.

In the 1930s, he led a heparin in thrombosis prophylaxis. In the 1940s he developed a secure method of pneumonectomy.

1954 succeeded his team the first use of the heart -lung machine in Europe ( the second successful use at all).

In 1962 he received the Canada Gairdner International Award. In 1946 he received the Grand Prize ( Stora Pris ) of the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. He was more honorary doctorates (Cordoba in Argentina, Coimbra, Turin 1954, San Marco University of Lima, Grenoble 1949, Sorbonne in 1950, Cuyo University, Mendoza, Argentina).
