Clark Ross

Clark Winslow Ross ( born March 27, 1957 in Maracaibo ) is a Canadian composer, guitarist and music educator.

Ross grew up in Venezuela, Peru, the U.S. and Belgium before the age of seventeen came to Toronto to study music at the University of Toronto and the Royal Conservatory of Music. His composition teachers were Samuel Dolin, John Beckwith, Ka Nin Chan and Gustav Ciamaga. He taught from 1987 to 1990 at the Royal Conservatory, then at McMaster University. Since 1992 he teaches composition, counterpoint, harmony, musical analysis, electronic music and guitar at the Memorial University of Newfoundland.

As a composer Ross Young Composer's Award from the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra and commissions received, inter alia, the CBC, the Newfoundland Labrador Arts Council and the Arts Council and the Canada Council. In 1999 he received the President's Award for Outstanding Research at Memorial University. He was 2003 Composer in Residence of the Waterford New Music Week 2007 in Ireland and guest composer of Wheaton College in Illinois. In 2011 he was nominated for Last Dance for Juno Award as a classical composer of the year. Recordings of his compositions were, inter alia, played by the guitarist Daniel Bolshoy and Sylvie Proulx, pianist Kristina Szutor and cellist Vernon Regehr. As a guitarist Ross performs with his own compositions and works by contemporary composers. He is married to the religious scholar Jennifer Porter.
